PA 6228 Behavioral Medicine

This course explores the psychologic health of individuals and how it interacts with overall well-being. The students will be given the opportunity to identify normal physical, sexual, social, and psychological processes and distinguish these from processes due to illness and injury. The students will then be taught to clinically assess patients' state of mental health and development and develop treatment plans. Topics covered will include the classification of common mental illnesses set forth in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and emphasis on timely recognition and the importance of appropriate referrals to collaborate with other health care professionals in the management of patients with mental illness.
