Objectives

Our goal is for students to flourish within a Christian environment, participate in a visual arts curriculum that examines historical context, contemporary issues and multimedia technologies while balancing both theory and practice. Above all, we teach our students to be creative problem-solvers with open, responsible and flexible attitudes, capable of generating multiple solutions to contemporary visual challenges. We emphasize individualized attention and preparation of our students to be competitive in the exhibition circuit and a job market where creative skills are in high demand

Foundation Art Core - The foundational art core consists of a strand of courses that provide the crucial foundational creative skills that all art students need to properly transition to their chosen major areas including: Introduction to Studio practice two drawing courses, , the principles and elements of 2D, 3D design, and 4D design and an introductory creative technologies studio course,

Design and Media Technology Programs - These programs will train students to be conversant in creative fields at the intersection of emerging digital technology and studio practice for client and commercial-based work. The Design program prepares students for developing visual communications, digital/physical environments and products. New programming in the entertainment and media technology fields prepares students for developing careers in photography, film production, animation, or gaming design. Students will engage in studios, prototyping and research approaches and design history and theory, for understanding a wide array of evolving needs that face designers today. Students will learn about creativity, conceptual development, problem solving/seeking, creative technologies, research strategies, and professional practices via assignments requiring analysis/ critique of current cultural trends, appetites, values and dilemmas. Reviews of design portfolio work are required throughout the degree program to help ensure professional development, communication and presentation skills.

Studio Art Program – This program develops a wide range of fine art practices including the study of various histories in creative culture, theoretical models, and engagement with creative critical dialogue. The studio art program is for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies or professional careers in art related fields. Art students in this program have the opportunity to not only engage with fine art studio disciplines, but to innovate and expand into the future of art making through emerging technologies. The studio art program is broken down into several concentration areas for students to pursue including:

  • Printmaking
  • Drawing and Painting
  • Sculpture

Technology Requirements

All art majors in our design and digital programs, are required to purchase an approved laptop and digital camera system prior to their sophomore year art courses.. Having the proper personal technology helps ensure that students are equipped to effectively participate in their class(face-to-face or online),, complete studio work, develop professional quality imagery of their work, and also prepare students for professional engagement with their creative career fields. Please contact the director of the art program for current technology specifications and needs for these programs.

Major

B.F.A. – The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is a professional degree with focused preparation of art course including a foundational art curriculum, art history and theory studies, concentration studio classes and professional practicum work (occupying 65% of the total degree plan). The BFA is an industry/academic standard and is designed for those art majors who are interested in pursuing graduate school to get an M.F.A. degree (Masters of Fine Art) or in-depth professional preparation for entering their chosen career field. Students in the B.F.A. program have many amazing opportunities including the planning and creation of a senior exhibition project professionally exhibited at HSU's Ira M. Taylor Memorial Gallery.

Minor

An 18 credit minor in art is offered to students pursuing a bachelors outside of the art program.

Portfolio Reviews

All art majors participate in a portfolio review process so they can improve their skill sets through identifying strengths and addressing weaknesses. Art faculty work with students during their degree programs to get specialized feedback on their body of work to identify and discuss the student’s quality of skills, technique, professional development needs.
