Objectives

The department offers the student the opportunity of gaining a broad-based foundation in the respective chemical, physical, or environmental science field by providing fundamental training in the application of chemical and physical principles and introduces the liberal arts student to a basic understanding of chemistry, physics, or environmental science. The course of study is designed to prepare the student for teaching, industrial work, and graduate education.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Interdisciplinary Major

Bachelor of Science

The major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BIMB) requires a minimum of 81 hours of science and mathematics. Because this degree is interdisciplinary, no minor is required.

Chemistry

Bachelor of Science

The Chemistry major requires a minimum of 38 semester hours of Chemistry. A minor is recommended in a physical or life science, or mathematics. The student preparing for graduate study in chemistry should take additional work in mathematics and physics.

Physics

The Physics minor requires a minimum of 24 semester hours of Physics, including PHYS 1320/1120, 1321/1121, 2410, 3320, 3340, 4310, and three credits of 4090.

Physical Science

Bachelor of Science

The Physical Science major is a 44-hour major of interdisciplinary study in the physical sciences incorporating chemistry, geology, physics, and environmental science and allows students to choose 24 credits from interest areas in sciences.

The Environmental Science Minor establishes a strong foundational understanding of the environmental sciences and their application in modern society.  Environmental science minors must take ENVS 1111, 1311, 4350, and ENVM 4320, 4340. Students must complete either Track 1 (Geology) requiring GEOL 1103, 1303, and 3311 or Track 2 (Biology) requiring BIOL 1307 and 3410. Students majoring in biology are required to take the geology track to ensure a more interdisciplinary understanding of the field.

The Physical Science courses are designed to give the student an understanding of the physical universe. Note: PHSC 1301 or 3301 can be used as partial fulfillment of the science requirement in the university General Education curriculum.
