Management, M.A.M.

Dr. Jennifer Plantier, Program Director

The Master of Arts in Management (MAM) is the next step for aspiring graduates or leaders with an interest in pursuing management careers or for mid-career professionals looking to take on management responsibilities. This 30-36 hour program draws on all the disciplines of business and management, allowing students to develop their understanding of business operations and organizational behavior from multiple perspectives. Ultimately, the goal is for students to graduate with a solid foundation in effective management practice in their chosen industry, to prepare them for an eventual leadership role. The degree may be of particular interest to Hardin Simmons University students who have acquired a major in business administration or one of the university’s liberal arts degrees.

The MA in Management is a fully online program that provides students with the needed flexibility of online coursework to complete a graduate business degree. A minimum of 6 hours of coursework is full-time.

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for the MA in Management program, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate work. Early Admission to Graduate Learning (EAGL)

Undergraduate students who are approaching the senior year of undergraduate work at Hardin Simmons University are encouraged to apply to the EAGL program. Admission requirements are the same as those for full admission to the MA in Management program, except that the cumulative GPA for all HSU coursework to date can substitute for the overall undergraduate GPA. Admitted students may take up to 6 hours of MA coursework in their senior year to apply toward their MAM degree. By completing the remaining MAM core curriculum, electives, and all other requirements of the MAM, the student may receive the master’s degree upon the completion of 36 hours of graduate hour work that includes up to 6 hours taken as an undergraduate. The undergraduate degree will be awarded upon completion of all requirements for that degree program.

Undergraduates in Graduate Courses

In accordance with the standards of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), courses in the MAM program must be normally reserved for graduate students admitted to the MAM Program. Exceptions will be made only under the following circumstances:

  1. The undergraduate has been admitted into the EAGL Program.
  2. The undergraduate is a senior with a cumulative GPA of at 3.2.
  3. There is some extenuating circumstance which justifies allowing the undergraduate to take a graduate course.

Enrollment in the graduate course must be explicitly approved on a case-by-case basis either by the program director or by the dean of the Kelley College of Business and Professional Studies.

Time of Course Offerings

MAM courses are offered fully online. Classes are offered in 8-week formats with few exceptions. The calendar of course offerings allows select students the possibility of completing their MAM in as few as 12 months. Contact the program director for additional information.

The MA in Management’s comprehensive examination will require knowledge of specific information drawn from management and marketing, as well as some knowledge of the legal and regulatory environment, ethics and social responsibility in business. The student must successfully complete this exam with a minimum score of 70%. Students who score below the minimum score, will be required to pass a written and oral exam.
