PHYT 7232 Diagnostic Screening

This course provides a knowledge base for medical and physical therapy differential diagnosis. The focus is on foundational information and screening skills such as the comprehensive interview and systems review which help the physical therapist distinguish between neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) and systemic pathology. Students will be introduced to evidence-based tools and examination procedures to assist in the process of differentiating typical versus atypical clinical presentations with an emphasis on the decision-making process associated with atypical findings. Emphasis will be focused on performing a strong medical history, developing a robust neuromusculoskeletal and medical screen, and enhancing overall clinical reasoning skills to prepare students for direct access in the clinic. Understanding the relevance and uses of screening as the first part of a competent evaluation and assessment are the results of this course.
